Again thank you John. I'm grateful for this exchange because now I know it is not the pump / crank seal - I hauled out my Bentley and I'm a little better acquainted with the bulkhead end of the engine - because the back of the engine (timing chain cover around the crank pullley) is bone dry I've been Gunking and washing the engine and have crawled underneath about a half dozen times. Maybe the timimg chain cover has a couple of loose bolts, maybe it's a head gasket problem.
One thing that is odd, there is a threaded hole on the side of the block immediately above the ps pump which is open - I don't know what for and why it isn't plugged. When I first noticed it after cleaning the engine there was actually a drop of oil which looked like it had just emerged from the hole. I immediately concluded it was the source of the leak, I had a crankcase ventilation problem and blow by was driving the oil out the hole, but almost as quickly decided the hole must be blind and that couldn't be the problem.
Best regards,
Glen
