It really very simple once you have gone through it (ask burlyb). The way it was on my 89 was as follows. No check valve on the supply line (open elbow) and a check valve on the return line (not a ball in there but a plastic cone with a plastic little rod sticking out). I replaced the fuel pump and had suddenly very long start times. Then I replaced the straight elbow from the supply line with a check valve from Sobstory and left the return check valve alone. Now it starts immediately because it keeps the pressure in the supply fuel line. I have not gotten a good answer about the purpose of the return line check valve but the consensus seems to be that it is not needed. Saab no longer supplies them. Just leave it and don't worry about it.
Good luck, Harold
