I have a '91 900 S with a 5-speed. 120,100miles.
My opinion is to leave you S alone since it is the last year that the C900 (except the conv) was offered. I as well have 140hp and find it very useful around town and even more so on the highway. You must also realize once you begin to throw performance goodies on her, that the tranny is going to get more and more strain (eventually leading to goodbye tranny, and good bye to 2.5-3k in your wallet.
Here is what I'd do. Since you say that you want/have a projet car, find a Turbo/SPG in decent shape and tinker with it. I used to have a '83 Turbo 5-speed and yes, it was much faster than my '91 but much much more harsh. One thing I can never forget though is hearing that Turbo spool up! Like no other sound!! Ahhh.
Ok, well hope this helps ya,
