You probably *did* have a bad cell in your old battery.
My guess is that the brushes in the alternator are worn down beyond their service limit. It will put out voltage, but when there's a large load like the combination of wipers, headlights, and ventilation fan, the contact area between the brushes and the slip rings isn't quite enough for low resistance. You end up running the battery down instead of keeping it charged.
Pull the voltage regulator and see how long the brushes are.
