The pinion is on the end of the output shaft (the shaft that contains all the gears, synchos, and hubs) in the transmission. The pinion bearings hold the shaft to the case. When you can hear the bearings whine (under load, usually in 5th at first), then the bearing races are pitted (probably the layshaft too). No amount of oil/snake-oil is going to help. The damaged bearings allow slop in the output shaft. Either the bearings will disintegrate and take out some gears, or the slop in the shaft will. Regardless, at that point the transmission is beyond repair and you will have to find a core transmission to rebuild (not easy to find a rebuildable one).
IMHO, your only option is to stop driving it NOW, and have the transmission rebuilt while it is still possible.
