now a little bit of boost

Yesterday I followed your advice regarding troubleshooting the base boost problem I think I have. I plugged the vacuum line coming from the APC solenoid to the inner cooler tubing. Drove the car and no boost to yellow or red zone. A little irritated, I put the hose back on, took off fairly hard, and the boost gauge finally went to the middle of the yellow zone with significant acceleration of the car (nothing I had ever felt the car do before).
I am wondering if I plugged the right vacuum hose, is the APC solenoid bad, or was nothing wrong to begin with. The bypass valve was changed several months ago so I know that is good. This is odd because during everyday driving the guage needle never goes to the yellow zone. It always goes as high as the "notch" between the white and yellow zones.
