1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I have posted previously about my CV boot repair adventure. I will give the complete story so it might help other newbe Saab mechanics. I have a 91 900 NA with 150k miles. Noticed that the outer CV boot on the passenger side (original) was torn and figured that I would replace the boot before doing damage to the CV joint. Took the axle out to make sure no dirt got in the joint. Realized that the inner boot was original and completely hardened by the exhaust heat. The grease was liquefied also from the heat. So figured I would replace the inner boot also. Took the CV joint apart to clean the old grease and noticed that it had some signs of wear. So then I figured that I better get a completely rebuilt axle locally for $80 (from ARI I think). I know Sobstory has good ones for $69 but I'm trying to do this fast because I'm without car. Ordered the axle last Sunday and the part came in on Tuesday morning. I Go to the shop to check it out and realize that it looks different from mine because it does not have the ABS pickup ring. Guy looks in the book and says that the computer was wrong and that there was another part number for 90>. Would order the right part for me. Called today, and they don't have those in stock. Would have to ship my current axle and have them rebuild it and then install it again. The guy offered me to use the <89 part for the two weeks and then send that one back as defective once my axle comes back. Didn't like that solution so then I figured, since I have to wait, I might as well order from Sobstory. They are closed for the day so I looked at the site of our new sponsor (eEuroparts). They don't list the rebuilt axles but list two different CV joint kits (<89 and for 90>) the more recent one is a lot more expensive then the old one ($119.50 vs. $66.90) but there was one interesting comment. "You can use the old one by swapping the ABS pickup ring."

So the question is, are the pre- and post-90 axles completely indentical except for the ABS ring and how hard is it to remove the ring. It looks like it is pressed on there and I was afraid to break it. Can you just tap it off and will it fit on the profile of the rebuilt pre-90 axle? This would save me a huge headache. I would love to hear from somebody who has tried this.
Thanks in advance, Harold
