Your readings for the timing advance are spot on the stock setting - no worry there. If you are looking for the same perfrormance as your 9000 you may be a little disapointed - the 9000T16's are faster because they have much bigger intercooler and a more efficient gearbox. There should be no check valves on a 900. Boosting in the red and then settling down to t ered/yellow boarder on th eguage is what happens when the small IC on the 900 gets heatsoaked. It's a bit anoying having this surging action and you actually go faster by holding a lower boost steady. The basic concept for retarding the ignition is that the mor eretard you have the less efficient the combustion and therefore the less heat it generates (heat in the cylinder is a factor in producing knock) However you can get to a stage where you retard too much and although you can boost very high you are not producing much power! It's a balancing act - Saab set their retard at 4-5 deg from base 16deg - any less and yo will get early knock as you experienced before you changed the distributor. Any less than 10deg BTDC (under boost) and many peple find they loose power even with high boost on the guage.
