Anyone *ever* got a circlip out of the outer CV joint??

It seems that it takes an entirely new and different skills set to work on a Saab. Nothing seems useful from my ~48 years of wrenching :-)
I've been trying to tease that circlip out of engagement so that I can remove and clean the outer CV joint. Of course, they couldn't use a standard circlip with holes in each end for the circlip pliers... this one you have to magicallay push open and back at the same time. But (what a bunch of jokers those aircraft designers are at Saab :-)they have designed it so that the angles on the bent ends don't permit pushing in both those directions at once.
I can get both ears fully sideways, but due to the disadvantageous angle of the ears and the sidewalls of the cutout, I can't get any pressure to move the clip out of the groove 180* around the shaft from where I'm working.
I am willing to grind a pair of pliers to do this if I only know what grind to put on them.
What is the trick??? I *know* that there is one and the little Saab elves are watching from behind the trees having a great laugh at my misery.
