Problem solved! It turned out mainly to be a faulty O-2 sensor heating unit (supposed to heat the sensor up electrically when cold) so it was only working after the exhaust was sufficiently hot to activate it(entire sensor had to be replaced), which explains why it ran so great after 15 mins. Also: I had the factory original fuel filter still in (14 years old!)and it was sufficiently plugged to cause some fuel pressure inadequacy. Lastly, timing was extremely retarded which is in general very bad at high altitudes (Denver- 5280ft), resulting in loss of overall performance. According to my shop (Foothills Scandinavian, Wheatridge, CO), the O2 sensor is in use all the time and very crucial to be operating when cold. This shop seems very thorough and the owner (John)is always willing to spend minutes (even hours) going through everything with me. It's like a mini-education on Saabs. While the major parts of it (body, engine, trans.) are like new, (John says it has the best compression he's ever seen in an old-or new- Saab--in the area of 1.80 on each cylinder and 3-6 percent leak tested) the prev. owners neglected a lot of little things! Naturally I have been non-plussed with the amount of money I've put into this car (bought less than 1 mo. ago) taking care of these periferals; however as John explains it, I now have a car which outclasses any $20K new car on the road; will run longer and is safer, for a small fraction of the cost. I guess I'm hooked now!
