Yeah, this is getting frustrating. It's like overnight the car has decided to give up the ghost. I know it's closing in quickly on 200k, but this is a little ridiculous.
I rechecked timing, and fooled around with it a bit. I can adjust timing down to like 12 degrees, and the idle will be normal. It was at 15 degrees. At 12 degrees, off the line power is simply non-existent. Putting it back to 15 degrees equals a 1600rpm idle. I know it's supposed to be 14 degrees, but that nets me an 1100rpm idle.
I checked the FPR and vacuum cannister as well as the ELCD and they all hold vacuum. I replaced all the grommets in the intake manifold to ensure a good seal. The AMM is solid at 380ohms. I replaced the O2 sensor and it seems to be doing it's think. Voltage bounces between ~.3v and ~.7v - dead on target. I put back in the Beru plugs, regapped to .030". I went ahead and installed some brand-new Ford Motorsports 19# injectors that I bought for it, thinking maybe it was just anxious about the swap. Nothing.
Okay, that said, I set the timing between 13 and 14 degrees and a 1000rpm idle and went for a drive. There is a *nasty* surging between 2000rpm and 5000rpm, and it won't climb to redline. I can't tell if it's timing or fuel. Feels like timing, but I don't hear knock or missing.... it just surges. So, it seems I have a choice of perfect idle and no power, perfect timing and surging, or high idle and perfect power.
Tomorrow I am going to replace the fuel filter. After that, there is nothing maintenance related that isn't brand new. I may pull the AMM off the '88 9kt and swap just to verify I don't have a bad one. It's so bizarre that this just came on like this... I'm very perplexed. I may swap the FI ECU with another one, and possibly go find a new EZK box as well. Bah! After that, the only thing I can imagine is the wiring harness... it's an '86 so possibly susceptible to rot, but there is no evidence of it anywhere else.
Any other ideas? Anyone know if the EZK box has any sort of memory that could make it screw up the timing? I don't think it does, but if unplugging it or the battery will help, of course I'll do it...
THX,
-Justin
