Ohm load does not determine the # of speakers that can be hooked up to a amp but how you wire it & what the amp itself can take. Taking 2 4 ohm speakers & running them in parallel will result in a 4 ohm mono load to the amp. Wiring 2 4 ohm speakers in series will result in a 2 ohm mono load. When amplifiers run lower ohm loads, they produce more distortion which hurts SQ. How much it's really hard to say because it varies a lot amp to amp. Also most amps are only stable to 4 ohms mono (equal to 2 ohm stereo) while others like the Adcom amps I use are stable below .5 ohms. When you go from 4 to 2 ohms, 2 to 1 ohm, 1 to .5 ohm, etc the power from the amp theoretically doubles & the distortion level goes up as well (I can't remember if it doubles as well). So a 50x2 am goes to 100x2, 200x2, 400x2 :o) Running lower ohm loads also can shorten the life of the amp due to the added heat :o(
Sensitivity wise, the higher the # the better. For every 3 db, to our ears it seems twice as loud & twice the power is required to make noise/music at that volume. So if it takes 100 watts to make a speaker produce 100 db, 200 watts would equal 103 db & so on :o)
Many audio nuts actually use passive x-overs because they are suppose to give a more natural sound! But a good electronic one is a LOT easier to set up :o)
