Have had 2 900S's over past 10yrs, and another in the family. Only twice have I spent >$1k/yr: once for a tranny rebuild, and once again to comb through a my current darling when I bought it. I think it would be prudent to be *able* to spend $1k/yr, given a)car's age and b)near-inevitable trans rebuild if owned long enough. Last year I spent ~$150. The two yrs before about $800-900ea. The five years before that essentially zero-$100, not incl tires. And for a car my tech says is the best-kept '85 900S he's seen ;o)
That said, Saab work is never cheap; part hi parts cost, part high labor. If you can do menial tasks yourself, you're miles ahead already (easy to do does not equal cheap to have done) - Change oil/fluids? Flush a radiator with your garden hose? Change your own plugs/filters, etc? Dig out the squeaking cabin blower? If you don't want to get your hands dirty even a little, yeah, you can get nickle-and-dimed to death....
