If the engine misfires, the unburned gas from that cylinder gets "burned" in the converter, making it really hot. If you're parked on top of a pile of dry leaves... I guess the real danger is damage to the converter itself. Anybody have anything like this happen??

I've pulled plug wires like that with no ill effects, but just for a few moments at a time. Might be easier/safer to pull the wire off of each fuel injector instead. Presumably you are doing that to ID which ones are still firing.

Fuel/air mixture seems easier to ignite under higher load. Not sure why, but I've had fouled sparkplugs act like that. On another occasion it was plug wires that were "leaking" (insulation breaking down).

Check bad insulation on plug wires or surface arcing on distributor cap by waiting till its really dark & watching for visible arcing. Take off the cover over the plugs so you can see in there, get a little mirror to see the underside of the distributor. My '89 seems very intolerant of a dirty distributor cap & wires, & salty water likes to get up there... I clean all that stuff off with soap or detergent & water. I used to use solvents, but that really shortened the lifespan of the plug wires.

If you check the plugs by taking them out to see if they are fouled, its kind of foolish to put the old ones back in just to save $10.

The service procedures talk about pulling injectors & letting them spray into a set of cups or jars to see if the spray pattern is nice, fine & even. I've never done this ('89 215kmi), I've heard that its only the older (CIS?) injectors that are prone to erosion. If you do this anyway, I'd say don't take them out unless you have 8 new O-rings to seal them back in. The old ones will be hard & may not reseal.
