When my fuel pump gave up there was no warning. No noise, nothing. Just went from running fine to not running at all. Didn't start, didn't sputter, nothing. The fuelpump relay gets a signal (from the tachometer?) so the fuel pump does not run if you just turn the key "on" without starting. On my '89 there is a way to jumper a fuse to get the fuel pump to run. Then you should hear it underneath the floor of the trunk. Otherwise you have to have somebody crank the engine while you sit in the trunk & listen.
Best way is to remove the plywood floor of the trunk (its forward of the spare tire). There are 2 round plates held in with a rubber gasket. Small one is fuelgauge sender, big one is fuelpump. Pull that off & you'll see the top of the gas tank, with a large screwed-on cap with hoses & wires. That's where the fuel pump lives, & now it should be easy to hear even with the engine cranking.
