Hi. I'm an electrical engineer. First, please don't put any diodes in series with your speaker wires! A diode here will have the effect of rectifying the signal to the speaker, which means that it will cut out either the positive or negative portion of the waveform (depending on the direction you insert the diode). This will in effect produce a DC bias voltage going to your speakers--a bad thing. Also your music will be incredibly distorted if your speakers manage to not blow out from the DC bias.

Second, I don't think it is wise to hook your speakers in parallel with both decks, even if only one is turned on at a time. What you are doing is back driving the output of the unused deck, probably the cause of your distortion, and not good for either deck! The way to hook up the two decks is via a "Line Out" output from one deck to a "Line In" input of the second deck. The speakers hooked to ONLY this second deck. What this solution does is use only the pre-amp of deck #1, fed into the output amplifier of deck #2. With this scheme you could hook ap a SEPARATE pair of speakers to deck #1 speaker connections if you wanted, but please not the same speakers that are connected to deck #2. To successfully accomplish this scheme requires that one of your decks has the capability of accepting a line level signal from the first deck, and a selector switch on the front panel to select "External Input" or "Auz" or something like that.

If you can't do my recommended scheme, then you could go to Radio Shack and get a stereo speaker selector switch. This would be used to select which deck your speakers are hooked up to, allowing only one deck at a time to be hooked to your speakers. Not as elegant as my first solution, but it works. Good luck.
