... just forward of the stick. Remove the console or the boot between the center & forward consoles, peel back the carpet...

There is a steel box which contains the bottom of the shiftlever, as well as the igintion switch. Coming out the front of that box is the shift rod which goes thru the firewall to the transmission.

Where that shift rod comes out of the shifter box is a big rubber grommet and inside of that is a plastic bushing to make the rod slide easier. That grommet/bushing frequently gets torn/broke, or just sloppy.

It should hold the shift rod in place, so that when you move the lever side-to-side in neutral, the rod should only twist. Whatever you do, that rod should only twist & push-pull in a straight manner. It shouldn't move sideways.

Could be other problems with the transmission itself, but this is easy to check first.
