Most boot kits come with those crimp-on clamps. They can be slid over the alxe, and then crimped shut.
But, if the boot is damaged or ripped at all, or if there are signs that the joint has been contaiminated or lost some of its grease, it would be better to take the axle off and at least clean the joint out and re-assemble it with a new boot.
