Hi, all. I need some electrical help!
The car is an '89 900 4-door.
Yesterday morning, when I drove to work, everything worked fine.
When I started my car after work, I encountered the following scenario:
With headlights "off," all lights seem to work fine.
With 'parking lights' on, things seem alright for just driving or using the left turn signal. The right turn signal flashes slowly.
With headlights "on," the headlights themselves don't turn on. The driver's side lights (front corner and taillights) are on as if they are in 'parking lights' mode. The passenger side (right) lights are all weird. The corner bright white turn light is on, as are all of the yellow turn lights on that side, but not the front white parking light. Inside, the 'brights' dash indicator and the 'right turn' dash indicator are both lit about half-way (not fully on, not fully off.) The left turn signal works okay, but the right turn signal does nothing.
When diagnosing the problem, I noted the following:
With the headlights in the "on" position, I removed the headlight bulbs from the housings and noted that they are slightly lit (glowing.) The headlight relay makes a loud buzzing sound for several seconds when turning the headlight switch from "on" to "parking." With the headlights in the "on" position, I can remove the headlight relay and the left and right turn signals both work seemingly normally. I have checked all bulbs to see if something was burned out, or one of the double-filiment bulbs was shorted. No joy.
I think that this is everything that I found out. Oh... voltage is fine, the battery is new, and the alternator is putting out normally. And I checked the two battery ground locations (transmission and frame) and cleaned them and reattached the cables... no change.
Help!
Thanks,
Jeremy (pilot)
