Rob,
Sounds like a nice car...It depends on what you expect from the car however that determines if this is the right one for you. Since you are used to higher performance cars this particular car will be a solid car but will be SLOW. The automatic transmissions on these cars are 3 speed and by and large very troublesome. I have an auto '94T-convertible, it is still shifting fine at just over 100K miles. I change the fluid every time I change the oil and keep my fingers crossed that it will last. 5-speed manuals are the way to go with the old 900's. More reliable and more fun....gets as much out of the normally aspirated engine as you can.
The inspection by a SAAB mechanic is a great idea. The 1990 2.0 engine is solid and reliable...in 1991 the n/a engine went to 2.1 and gained about 12 more HP. The 2.1 engine had alot of head gasket corrosion problems if not cared for however. But...you can expect to do the head gasket on the '90 around 100K miles also.
The '90 got ABS and drivers airbag. Nice features but...the cars are tanks to begin with.
The fact that it is a NM car is great. Rust kills alot of the old 900's if not kept on top of. Rust is a real problem just behind the lower control arm mounting particularly on the right side...the left side stays coated with oil that drains down from the filter every time the oil is changed.
If you want a fun car...find a 5-speed turbo. They are easily tuned to get at least 20+ HP above the stock 160 HP. All old 900's are easy to care for engine wise...generally a tune up and new vacuum lines will cure any running problems. The engines are pretty bullet proof and will run upwards of 250K miles before any rebuild is considered.
More will have other thoughts I'm sure...
Todd
