I own a car similar to the one you are considering buying. It is a 1990 900 S with an auto trans and 92 k miles. I have owned it for about four and a half years and got it with 51 k miles. Before this I owned a 1984 900 S for four years. These are good, solid, safe cars. I believe 1990 was the first year for air bags (driver side only) on the 900. So, if you like an air bag, the 1990 and up models are you best bet.

These cars are very reliable but they must be well taken care of. That means plenty of routine maintenance. For example, I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 3 months. Every year (or two at most) I change the coolant and transmission fluid. These basic measures go a long way to keeping things under control. But, I still spend an average of 1000 to 1500 per year on maintenance and repairs. I do most oil changes and minor stuff myself but give the car to a good independent who is very knowledgeable about the 900 model for most repairs.

If you do not have a good independent Saab garage nearby and you are not planning to repair the car yourself, perhaps this is not the car for you. Before buying the car, you might also want to bring the car to a Saab specialist to give it a good looking at.

These cars brake and handle very well. They are excellent in rain and snow. They are not particularly fast accelerating. I think they are really good cars.

Good Luck

Jeff
