sounds like a turbo with no oil, hence the less smooth sound.(NO TURBOCHARGERS WERE HURT IN THIS ASSESMENT) sort of a cool noise really, but its apparantly not a positive sign. i could easily convince someone my car was a turbo, if i took them for a ride. I too hear it mostly when decelerating in a low gear. 1-st 2-nd ect.
I know what a turbo sounds like becaues i also drive a 99' 9-5 SE 2.3 turbo.
the pitch of the gear noise gets higher with RPM.
i found that by far the best fix is to get a K&N cone filter, this way the induction noise far supersedes the transmission noise. :-)
