as in ring and pinion gear set

Think of a rear axle on a truck. The ring and pinion gear set is in the large center area. The big ring gear turns with the tires, in the same orientation. The driveshaft rotates the pinion gear, along the driveshaft axis. The pinion is small and turns the large ring gear. The "rear-end" gear ratio is how many times the small pinion gear (and driveshaft) must turn to turn the large ring gear once. Our trannys have the same setup, only much weaker.
