Ok, so I was riding my 90 spg into town last night, and pulled over before i got on the interstate to pull the backseat down (speakers in cabinets...darned 4x10's suck...) and noticed a horrid exhaust note. It's the classic c900 exhaust note, except over exagerrated and kinda low and gutteral (sp?). Also, I noticed that awful, sickly-sweet, burning coolant smell. Yuck.

Then, I popped the hood to give it a listen. Engine sounded ok, but not great. Gave it a little rev, it was fine. Coming back down to idle it was _not_ happy. While it's always had a bit of an idle lope, it never had problems settling down into it. Ya know what I mean? But now, it sounds like the clutch is almost slightly engaging on it's own and the cars starts to almost want to stall, then it disengages, does it a couple more times and then goes to idle. Wierd ehh? It sounds like the clutch, but it could be coming out of the engine, though I do tend to doubt it.

Could it be a blown piston ring in the front cylinder, or is the clutch more likely? It seems bizare to me that the clutch would all of the sudden start doing this, right as the idle note changes and I smell coolant. The resevoir probably lost 1-2 inches since the last time I checked it, and the oil (freshly changed) seems clean and not frothy like it was mixed with coolant.

Any thoughts? I'm bringing to my friend's shop to pull the clutch cover and see what's up, as well as to re-torque the head. I was planning on pulling the head this summer (it's been leaking a little oil) and replacing it with a worked over 2.3 head w/ 2.1 intake (reground cams, SD springs, etc.), but really don't want to do this now, as I don't have the money, or a 2nd car.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I'll update the thread tomorrow once I've taken a deeper look tonight.

Thanks in advance,
-Dan

p.s. it's a 1990 900spg ~126k miles, original clutch to my knowledge, unaware of the head ever being pulled. spg9 APC stage II, RRFPR, 30# injectors, SPG9 AID, and other misc.
