Chris and JohnK, thanks for the advice. The clutch thing seemed really wierd to me too, since I was in neutral for the reving, but I couldn't think of anything else that could make it do that. Once I have it up on the lift tonight, I can see if the wheel spins at all while in neutral.
I'll also look for coolant leaks that could be dripping. Of course, that wouldn't explain the exhaust note. Oh, I also neglected to mention a bit of black smoke being expelled in the exhaust while revving in neutral. I could see that hose with the thermostat leaking over the clutch though... that could be interesting and explain some strange slutch behavior, but not the exhaust sound or black smoke...
Did you mean that the retorque would or would not help?
Assuming I am getting coolant leaking into a cylinder, what are my chances of the engine being ok? Do I need to have a compression check done?
This is realy perplexing me (and ruining my morning).
Thanks for all of the help. If you have any more ideas, please send them along.
Thanks, -Dan
