And it won't help the turbo, either. Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: vortex generator added hp, bryan ![]() ![]() |
I can just see it now. Engineers have been studying and optimizing intake systems for decades. All the big automotive manufacturers have dozens of engineers working full time to squeeze a little bit more out of an intake, using CFD (computational fluid dynamic) computer models. I'll bet at least ONE has turned on the TV at 3 am and seen the infomercial by now. I'll bet you don't see vortex generators stock in any production cars.
If somebody came up with a legitimate way to increase mileage and horsepower, do you really think they'd need to buy airtime at 3 AM, next to the Abdominizer? They'd have licensed it and sold it to every car company in the world.
The turbo is 'powered' by the exhaust, and I doubt any 'swirl' the vortex generator provides will make it through the violence of a combustion chamber and exhaust valves. As for the intake, if the vortex generator is before the turbo, any vortices will be destroyed by the spinning turbo vanes, and if it's after the turbo, no effect.
Of course the commercial makes it look good. They wouldn't buy airtime to say "This is crap, but buy it anyway" followed by 29 minutes of dead air.
There are a few reasons this doesn't work. First, there is the mumbo jumbo about how the little vortices mix better with fuel. Right. Those little vortices are going to be maintained through the 'generator', down throught the intake tubes, squeeeeze through the intake valves, all without coming apart. Yup, sure thing.
Think it through. The science sounds nice, but doesn't hold up. And if it does work, please provide one credible reason why every car manufacturer doesn't use it.
