that's a vortex generator.
In my business, one of the things we measure is mass flow of air using a thermal dispersion mass air flow meter (sort of like the Bosch AMM - but more accurate). In order to accurately measure air flow you either need an inordinately long distance from flow disturbances to the measurement element or (I'll get to my point soon) a flow conditioner of some sort.
One type of flow conditioner uses a screen with hexagonal holes to generate turbulence and even out the flow across the cross-section of the pipe. The turbulence is the result of (my point) vortices generated by the flow crossing this screen - just like the screen over your AMM.
Therefore, you don't need no steenking vortex generator, you already have one.
