THere are 3 bearings in there, right? THey form small indentations on the surfaces of the metal that they mate up to. WHen it rotates, the bearing goes into and out of the indentations. That's what causes the vibrations. I have heard you can run your finger along the surfaces and feel them. I've never actually done it myself. WHat many recommend is to swap sides. That's because they only form indentations on the forward running sides. So by swapping sides the bearing contacts the opposite side. The passenger side grease becomes runny over time due to exhaust pipe heat. BTW, I developed vibration in the past couple months and might swap the drivers on my 87 spg. It involves removing both drivers and the rear differential cover. I plan on buying new orings for the drivers (and a new cover gasket).
