Our '94T-conv. had pretty much the same thing happen. It overheated in Providence traffic. Complete head gasket failure.

The reason I say try another mechanic is that our car had been running hot for a while but otherwise had no signs of the immenant failure. It would immediatly heat up when you stopped in traffic...then ok when driving at speed. This had been going on for a few months and it was normal for that car...I had just bought it and it always was this way...it's an automatic and turbo...I just thought the extra heat was from that...stupid me.

Anyway...I thought the head was going to be warped beyond repair but it was fine...there was some corrosion on the block which could have been a killed in action for the engine but...my mechanic fixed it and the car has been fine. This happend at 84K miles....car just rolled over 101K last week and is running very nicely.

Long story short....get another opinion before getting another engine. But...in the end if you do need another engine...they can be had for relativley small $$. I remember seeing an ad in the classifieds for 3 or 4 engines each priced around $400.
