After I got your message I went back to my shop manuals. I'd been looking in the A/C section, which is in the accessories book, where there's a crummy schematic of the electrical wiring diagram for the system among all the other mechanical descriptions and diagrams. Wrong book! I looked in the electrical book, and found a detailed schematic with all the components and pins clearly labeled. So now I see exactly what you're talking about.

I think you're right -- the problem lies between pin 30 to 87A on relay 156, and the compressor via the coolant temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is not corroded at all. I'm going to check for voltage there this morning, then back to the relay. My suspicion now is that I've obviously got the proper signal to pin 30 and through the relay to pin 87, because the fan runs... but not to pin 87A, which means I have a bad relay. I'll figure it out and let you know.
