Take your meter and using the ohm function check for an open in the coil. If it is showing low resistance to ground there is a chance re-shimming it may fix it. To if its an adjustment run 12 volts right to the coil terminal and press lightly on the clutch plate. If the added finger pressure makes it pull in, chances are the face is worn so far that the magnetic field can't pull the plate in on its own. CAUTION: if the clutch is shorted, the wire suppliying 12 volts will melt and yes you need a new clutch.. The good news is if it clicked in you can probably reshim the clutch and get a couple more years out of it with no harm. Post the results and I can describe the proceedures if thats the problem. And the clutch can be replaced without rebuilding the compressor and emptying the system if it has not overheated, if it has not overheated the system is probably not empty. An overheated clutch will almost always burn up the front seal and let the Freon out.
