Hi, Keith
It's not shorted to ground, and it didn't overheat -- I still have full freon pressure. I think I'm just going to have to take it apart and rebuild it. I'm not really looking forward to doing it, as I haven't done this before, but the shop manual has a step-by-step procedure, so I'll get the parts and muddle through it. I don't know if re-shimming will fix it yet, but I'll let you know what I find when I get it apart. Thanks for the advice!
