Some luck - b-column coming apart from the roof

I didn't know this was possible in a quality car. Last weekend hauling some stuff (not even much) I noticed the door gap (it's a 5 dr '87) getting thinner on the upper end. Closer inspection showed actual tears in the metal on the upper side of the b-column, where it meets the roof. I don't believe this. I don't know what the previous owner hauled with this car, but it must have been rocks or so. I sure hope I can weld it together again. The thing to do is probably jack it up a little but not too much in the middle, weld it, let the weight come on again and hope it holds. Maybe it'll solve the annoying wind noise too.
Could it be that this occurrence is due to the non-original sunroof? Maybe this weakens the construction on a 5 dr so much that the body just sort of gives in? I understand that the 5 drs aren't too rigid anyway.
