Some folks use additives like Marvel Mystery Oil - it can thin the oil and sometimes clean out some gunk in a sticky lifter. I frankly don't use any oil additives - I stick with good oil and change it frequently.
I'm remembering my 900 layout (I've been driving 9000's for a while now) and as I remember, the distributor is at the front of the engine, the side AWAY from the belts. That's actually pretty good news. The timing chain is on the belt end, so what you're hearing is most probably a sticky valve lifter.
Here's a question - is it a tap, or does it sound more like someone hitting metal with a small hammer? The difference is louder, almost like someone hitting a bell, with a hollow sound. A tap is probably a lazy lifter, and not a problem. The louder RAP could be a sticking valve, not a good thing. But there is a significant amplitude difference.
I would do an oil change and see if that helps. Otherwise, live with it until you get around to replacing the valve cover gasket anyway, then make sure the oil feed tube is in good shape.
