16v &head gaskets - the real truth please

I am in the process of selling my 90 SPG, with almost 100K on it. I let one potential buyer take the car to a local dealer. Of course the guy came back with a list full of 'potential' problems and wanted to 'deal' (not so fast, buddy). All the stuff on the list seemed pretty standard for a car of its age, EXCEPT for the bit about replacing the head gasket ($$$$). That was a surprise given that I do not notice any negative performance issues or visual ques. So what exactly is the story with these. Are there symptoms to look for? Are they just prone to failure? How long do they typically last? The competency level required to do such a job?? Am I being duped? Any insight would really be appreciated.
