What to look for is leaking around the head, froth on the dipstick, or crap floating in your antifreeze.
My '89 SPG just had the original headgasket replaced a month ago after 225,000 miles. I won't complain bacause for the last 80,000 miles that I've owned it I've been running 18 lbs of boost.
Replacing the headgasket can be done by yourself, but go look at someone who has done it and read about it. Jeff&Royces Saab Extravaganza comes to mind. (you can find them in the links page)
Hope this helps.
