Ok, my mechanic verivied what i belived to be the begining stages of pinion wear on my newly aquired 91' 900 S 5 spd. (137k miles). i changed my fluid over to non synthetic 10w-30 motor oil. the fluid i drained was full(3 quarts in the bucket....... but so incredibly nasty, it was very near black, the consitancy of soy sauce(close in color too) and it smelled awful.
*Thanks for not specifying any trans fluid meilage interval saab :-( *
anyways, since i dont have 2 grand for a tranny rebuild. (im 18) i would like to know how i can maximise the life of my box. I can figure full throttle time should be minimal, and nice smooth shifts would be good.but i dont know.
since i have gotten the car i have been fascinated with the art of double clutching and therefor have never done anything but, and am pretty darn good at it now. since this is for the benifit of syncros i doubt the pinion will care.
THE MAIN THING I WAS WONDERING was that since the pinion noise is most heard in 5th and somewhat in 4th gear, is this time in 4th and 5th more damaging than time in 1st through 3rd? this would be unfortunate because i have a 20hr highway trip (there and back) coming up in one week. 3rd gear isnt going to be too possible! :-)
thanks for the help and advise,
austin
