Your car came from the factory with 10w30. If it has gear oil, it was done by the previous owner. 10w30 can smell bad if it is that old. The smell is different from gear oil. Gear oil is a sulphur smell; old 10w30 is a metallic smell. If you are unsure, use (synthetic) gear oil.
Two suggestions. First, if you only changed the oil once, change it 2 or three more times (after driving 200 to 500 miles). Changed mine at 140,000 and the new oil got dirty quickly. First change at 100 miles looked almost as bad as the old oil. I ended up doing 4 changes over about 2000 miles. Going well 40,000 miles later. Second, drive it easy. The harder you drive the shorter the life.
