'91 900 trans failure, cost:value, any hope?

Recently had trans fluid changed out and screen filter cleaned on '91 900 automatic during a service. One week later, car fails to shift out of first. I wait a minute, hit the gas and same thing happens. On third attempt car suddenly feels like I slammed on the brakes (which I didn't touch). I shifted all the way down to 1 just to get off the road. Car was able to shift upwards much later in the day. Local mechanic suggests that cleaning out trans fluid may have revealed existing trans problem which lead to current problem. Local mechanic said his review of the car indicates that car sometimes doesn't shift out of 1st, and at other times seems to slip between 2nd and 3rd. Local and reliable Trans specialist said the '91 trans is fixed to the engine and recommends only Saab dealer or specialist look at. Saab dealer mechanics suggest that trans will probably have to be replaced. A used or rebuilt trans will cost more than car is currently worth. Am I receiving reliable/good information? I can't afford to keep the car if it isn't salvageable below current value.
