It sounds like you have gotten all the right information there is.
Many times the trans is capable of holding on as long as the old fluid is there. This is when a normal service schedule have not been performed and the fluid have been allowed to go way beyond it's expectations, wearing the trans out.
When flushing old fluid out and putting new one in, you pretty much shock the trans and seals start to leak.
The second gear is usually what goes bad first, but we have some customers that have been able to drive the car for years with just 1.st and 3.d gear.
You kind of have to revv the engine fairly high on first and slowly let the accelerator up to allow the trans to shift into third. By passing the second gear.
