Coolant Flush Q's Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I did a drain & fill with a little flush on my convertible last night. I felt like an idiot looking for the radiator drain plug UNDER the car. I'm also glad I got some socket extensions last year, as the block drain plug is hard to get at. The required tool for this job is the 2' pipe I can slide over the breaker bar/rachet when needed, though. That t-stat housing was on tight, as was the block drain.
Anyway, I did the coolant job for the following reasons:
1. See if MB (i used Chrysler expensive long life stuff, same?) would cool the car better.
2. Replace Thermostat
3. Replace drippy Heater Bypass Valve (4 hoses, 1 leaky O-ring)
So, whoever says the chrysler/MB coolant is $15 a gallon is getting a deal. Mine was a tad over $20 from a Dodge dealer's parts desk.
At least the Saab dealer gave me a "multi-car" 10% discount. He didn't add another 10% for Saab Club of NA or 10% for TSN... gotta ask, though! :)
My questions are:
Should I have run a round of prestone super flush? I didn't, what are the implications? I can do another flush. I have what I need in the garage, and now that I know what I'm doing it will go FAR quicker.
What hoses do you tap into for a good flush and backflush? I have the "T" kit from my parts store, but the end of my hose broke and I didn't know which hoses to do. I just ran water into the t-stat housing, coolant tank, and 3 of the hoses around the heater bypass valve for 15 or so minutes. Not at high pressure/full flow, just a light flush.
Now that I'm done the fan comes on when the needle is at a tad over 5/8. My SPG never goes much over 1/3, sometimes it peaks at 1/2. Is this cause for concern? I've seen that 5/8 or so is "in spec" from what I've read here. I also guess the temp sensor isn't the most precise unit, and 5/8 seems OK. I guess when it's 90 out i'll see what happens. Then I may go with the 82C thermostat. Now I just have the 89 degree model.
Thanks for the tips!
Randy
