I am going to assume the reason you are turning on the heat is....your engne temp is very high in stop and go traffic. Depending on the model year, T-stats will try to open while also starting to close on the cooling passageway which goes to the heater. At normal radiator cooling temps, the modest closing on the heater circuit does nothing...but if the temperature continues to increase it will close it more until it is trying to give everything to the radiator for cooling (its more effective than the car heater coil) and the heat into the car is cut off completely....
AKA...it sounds like your T-Stat is working ok...i.e. opening to the radiator fully...but the car is reaching high temperatures....so....
1. The radiator fan(s) should be on fully at this time....is it or they??
2. If not go to the fan temperature switch (left top end of radiator).
3. If the fan(s) are on...then go to the radiator...possible partial plugging....up to 93 it is pretty inexpensive for you to change it out yourself if you are so inclined...just did mine for OEM radiator at cost of
$129 delivered...
