Or any other car system. At the age of your car the hoses are probably dry and cracking. But so are the fuel and brake hoses. The compressor has a good bit of wear on it, A slow leak that was charged without adding a slight bit of oil now means your compressor is running without lubrication. The clutch bearing is "permanantly" lubricated, so are the wheel bearings, and they all need service too. One of the worst part of A/C work is the outlay for tools, you can use a 13mm wrench in a lot of places, but a vacume pump? and the price of R-12. We think nothing of adding a quart of oil at $1.00 now and then but $50 for freon? Cost vs benifit I guess.
