Hey Dan, Thats a nice 900. Im 18 and I bought a 900 just like that about 3 months ago. Its a white 1991 900 S 3 door 5 speed, 138,000 miles. It supprises me very much that the engine was replaced on that car, mines original and runs like a champ. Then again it wouldnt run at all if it wasnt taken care of all this time.
Im not sure what to tell you, I wouldnt worry too much about the auto trans. if its working well now, it should work well for a while yet.
If that car is in good condition and runs flawlesly and you can get it for ~2200 dollars then its probably a good deal.
If its going to cost you more like $3000 then I'd be patiant and keep looking for a good 91+ 3 door 5 speed (unless ofcourse you have nightmares of pinion bearings, as i do now...lol)
i drove around a 1990 sedan automatic with 120K miles for a lil bit, belongs to the highschool autoshop, but me and some buddies snuck it out quite a few times. The trans seemed to be very solid, no slipping, no crazy shifting, ect. although having only 3 gears is a bit of a preformance problem lol. that thing was a good car though, in fact its what got me into classic 900's i used to be all about 9000's and came really close to buying one, a totaly kick ass red 1992 9000 turbo 5 speed hatch with black leather, all the options, and bomb dunlop's on 9000 aero rims!! omg i wanted it so bad, but dad said he didnt like Saab's and thaught it'd be a total disaster with its 178,000 miles. I was disapointed untill my friend got me into BMW and i went out and got my first car, a 1990 525i 5 speed (Red-Black leather)
had that car for the whole summer after junior year and all but the last week of 1st semester senior year. It saved my life and the life of two friends from my stupidity and lack of responsibility. Car was totaled.
I went into 2nd semester with no car, but being able to drive my mom's 1999 9-5 2.3 about whenever i wanted. Then like i said 3 mos ago i bought the 900 because i discovered how much i loved the one at autoshop and because i didnt have another 8000 dollars for a BMW. I paid 3000 for my 900.
