Original Saab keys are STEEL, whereas most, if not all, keys available at not only hardware stores but also locksmith's and my local Saab are BRASS. Simple test using a refregirator magnet is a quick proof. Obviously, brass keys do not last long. I brought a key tag (a small tag attached with original package;you may still have; a description in Owners Manual) to a local Dealer. They only had brass blank keys (said they cannot stock steel blanks for old models). After I discussed with the part manager, he agreed to order blank "steel" keys to Sweden. Because one of my original keys are in good shape, I can make copies at locksmith (much cheaper). Somebody in this B. B. posted that his local Dealer in Ohio does have steel blank, though. I was told it takes 6 weeks. Be aware that the key cylinder, but not keys perse, is one of the popular problems in old Saab models. Mine ('93 900S 80K) just started showing this problem, so I orderd a replacement to Sweden, too (from same Dealer at the same time). This way, I do not carry two different keys unlike if we install a aftermarket key cylinder (~$55). The price for "original" Saab key cylinder from Sweden is about $60.
