any chance it's the nut that is stripped...(suspension)

so i was putting on new ball joints this weekend and as i was tightening my shock back on the lower a-arm something stripped (nut or stud?). i can't get it off and was wondering if it's likely that it's just the nut instead of the stud, which in turn means i need a new a-arm. this weekend i will get the nut off and take care of it one way or another. just wondering if this happens a lot to the nut, or the stud. (oh and i was using a properly set torque wrench) rust, rust, rust :(
thanks
