Here are links to Townsend Imports pages on adjusting the shifters on C900s. If you have an early '86 the page directly below has a few more details on the external shifter mechanism. Both this page and the page on the link have enough detail to adjust the shifter.
The only other thing I'd add is to soak the nut on the adjustment collar with PB Blaster to loosen up the rust.
