If you are refering to the thin spacers between the driver housing and the tranny case. They set the backlash of the ring and pinion. If that is wrong or changed you stand a good chance of ruining the gearset. They also set the preload on the bearings, needed for a taper type bearing to operate properly.
Also make sure you don't swap em side to side, that will really screw things up. Your best bet is to put the origanals back in, hope you can find it.
