The 9000 uses a helical gear drive, backlash is mostly determined by where the holes are drilled in the case and not as critical. The ring and pinion in a 900 can be checked for backlash with a dial indicator. Bearing preload can be checked with an inch-pound tourque wrench. Backlash should be .006 to .009 on ring and pinions. Bearing preload for used berings should be 15-20 inch/lbs. The problem can be that a used ring and pinion gets a wear pattern to it, The actuall backlash needs to be the same after reassembly as before taking apart. Generally, a .002 change in the side shims will result in a .003 change in the backlash.
