True, the 3 speed auto is somewhat noisy.
If the auto is currently in good shape, and the fluid looks good, it is probably OK. My 1985 900T has just at 200,000 miles on it. It has been on AMSOIL synthetic ATF since about 25,000 miles. Still strong, though there is a small leak at the torque converter seal--$20 part, day and 1/2 labor, so I simply keep it filled.
Before purchase, have it checked thoroughly by a competent Saab independent. Pay attention to the final drive, which can lead gear lube without leaving any drops on the ground.
If you do get one, change the fluid to synthetic ATF, the final drive to synthetic gear lube, and it won't wear out (though, like anything mechanical, it could break at any time).
